Sciatica

Sciatic pain (Sciatica) is frequently described as mild to intense pain in either or both legs. Pain doctors describe this condition as Lumbar Radiculopathy. If the compressed nerve is in the neck, this is called Cervical Radiculopathy. Lumbar sciatica pain occurs when a nerve in the lower spine has been compressed. There are five sets of nerves in the lower back that can cause sciatica.

There are a number of causes for Sciatic Nerve Compression:

  • Bulging, slipped and herniated discs, cervical or lumbar
  • Cervical and lumbar spinal stenosis
  • Spondylolisthesis, acquired or developmental
  • Traumatic injuries, most frequently caused by car accidents, falls, and sports injuries
  • Piriformis Syndrome, named for the piriformis muscle. This muscle can spasm and compress the sciatic nerve, causing pain, tingling and numbness in the buttocks and along the sciatic nerve down the leg
  • Spinal tumors, although rare, benign or malignant, can cause sciatica pain.
