If you are experiencing low back pain and/or leg pain, the cause of this pain may be Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction. The lowest region of the spine is the sacrum or coccyx, frequently called the tailbone. The sacroiliac joint lies just above the tailbone and functions as the connector between the sacrum and the pelvis.
Sacroiliac joint pain can be difficult to diagnose, but the medical profession now recognizes that the Sacroiliac Joint Injection or Nerve Block provides the most accurate diagnostic information. While the symptoms are similar to those experienced with other spine conditions, relief from pain when treated with the sacroiliac joint injection is solid diagnostic information confirming the sacroiliac as the source of this pain. This diagnostic tool which can pinpoint the source of this pain, with its added benefit of relieving this low back and/or leg pain, is a procedure performed on an outpatient basis at the Tristate Multi-Specialty Medical Services PC.
A patient undergoing a Sacroiliac Joint Injection conducted by the Tristate Multi-Specialty Medical Services PC will lie on his or her stomach for this procedure. The area of injection will be cleansed and numbed. X rays with the use of fluoroscopic contrast will guide the doctor to inject medicine in the appropriate location. This injected material often consists of two medications: a local anesthetic and an anti-inflammatory steroid medication. Throughout this process you will be medically monitored and your doctor will determine when you are ready to go home. Most people are able to return to regular activities the next day and your doctor will give you guidance on this.
If you experience immediate pain relief during the procedure, it is evident that the source of pain is the sacroiliac join. The anti-inflammatory medication may provide a more long-term relief to pain for weeks or months. This will allow you to get a physical therapy and exercise program going so that your pain will not return. At Tristate Multi-Specialty Medical Services PC we share your goal of relief from pain and return to an active lifestyle.
