A Trigger Point is an area of muscle that has been traumatized, often from an exercise or sports injury.
This spot feels tight or twisted and is tender to any deep pressure or palpation. While trigger points can occur anywhere in the body, they are most frequently felt in your neck, the back of your head, shoulders or low back. Trigger points can trap nerves and cause referred pain, pain felt in another part of your body but in close proximity to the trigger point.
The doctors at Tristate Multi-Specialty Medical Services PC perform trigger injections on an outpatient basis. Your doctor’s examination will determine the exact location of your trigger point. Sometimes multiple trigger points are identified.
Your skin will be cleansed and then treated with a combination of a numbing medication and an anti-inflammatory steroid medication. After you have received your treatment your doctor will approve you to go home. At home, you will be encouraged to keep this area active as activity often helps to spread the medicine throughout the muscle.
While many patients experience immediate relief, for some patients this relief may occur over a period of 3-5 days. The duration of pain relief varies from weeks to months. If needed, these treatments can be repeated at 1-2 month intervals.
